Hampshire County Council have parking details/links for the county on their web site.
Users of this web site have provided the following information:
We are Motorhomers, and my partner is also disabled. We were in Winchester last year and parked in the local car park. Because of our length we hung over at the back but it wasn’t causing any nuisance to anybody else. He stuck his badge in the window and we went off to explore. Upon our return we had a ticket on the windscreen because we had not parked properly within the marked parking bay. Upon arrival at home we wrote a letter asking why we had been given a ticket and how could we park in the bay because of our length. We didn’t get much joy with the answer and they wouldn’t retract the ticket. So when we went to Lyndhurst, near the New Forest, we drove around for ages looking for a suitable parking place. In the end we drove to their Council offices and told them that, as they had no parking places in the town for Motorhomes and we wanted to visit their town, we were leaving the Motorhome on their car park - they didn’t argue. I reckon everyone should be wary all around Hampshire including Isle of Wight. Make sure to read all the instructions at car parks or ask a Traffic Warden. (Thanks to FD/RA for providing this information on 20 March 2007).
Basingstoke & Deane
On 4th September 2006 Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council provided the following information:
1. The car parks which have height restriction barriers are the Alencon Link car park, Basingstoke, Anchor Yard car park, Kingsclere, Hampshire, Silk Mill and Bell Street car park, Whitchurch, Hampshire (Silk Mill car park is currently closed for six months).
2. If the length of the motorhome exceeds the length of the parking bay, we are happy for the driver to park taking up two parking bays, however we would expect the driver to purchase two parking tickets.
3. None of Basingstoke Council car parks provides provision of toilet and waste disposal facilities.
4. No specific parking bays are provided for motorhomes and/or caravans.
5. I regret that none of the Basingstoke Council car park provide facilities for overnight parking.
6. All of the car parks without height restriction barriers are easily accessible.
On 23rd April 2008, in response to a follow-up request, the council provided the following information:
Basingstoke & Deane Borough operate a number of car parks within Basingstoke Town together with some rural car parks. The car parks which have height barriers are Alencon Link and Vyne Meadow car parks in Basingstoke; Anchor Yard car park, Kingsclere; Silk Mill and Bell Street car parks, Whitchurch. Vehicles which park over more than one bay are required to purchase pay and display tickets for each bay occupied. No specific bays are are provided for motorhomes. None of the car park orders allow for sleeping in vehicles, camping or cooking. None have toilet or waste disposal facilities.
Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council have further parking details on their web site Here.
East Hampshire
On 27th September 2006 East Hampshire District Council provided the following information:
No Car Parks belonging to East Hants District Council permit the parking of Motorhomes at all.
We have a new Car Park Order which will be implemented within the next month, and under this new Order Motorhomes will then be permitted in the two short term car parks in Petersfield, Causeway Pay and Display Car Park (owned by Tesco and policed by EHDC) and Central Pay and Display Car Park. There is a 4 hour parking limit on these car parks. There are no height restrictions on these car parks. Vehicles which park over more than one bay are required to purchase pay and display tickets to cover the number of bays taken up by the parked vehicle.
15th November 2006 - Checked the web site and the Car Park Order referred to has been implemented and can be accessed via the council's web site.
On 27th March 2008, in response to a follow-up request, the council said that there is one change to the information above. This is by virtue of the Council's Off Street Parking Places Order 2008 which allows motorhomes to park in the Causeway and Central car park for a maximum of 4 hours subject to the purchase of a paid ticket for each bay occupied.
East Hampshire District Council have further details on their web site Here.

Petersfield
For the past ten years we have travelled every quarter to near Petersfield to see my more ancient aunt who, like my wife, is disabled. The Waitrose car park has a nearby line of disability spaces with plenty of room to park a motorhome. Always conscious of a considerable overhang it has never been a problem. ................... until now. We got a ticket in November. I appealed in writing the same day. After long email correspondence, the Council has ignored the entirely reasonable argument that if around forty visits have produced no penalty, when the rules change, infrequent visitors should be allowed due consideration. With two elderly and disabled passengers, we need to park as close as possible to the supermarket for my aunt to top up her groceries. On the day we got the penalty our younger daughter was also with us. She too is disabled. Looking at simple statistics, before the penalty the probability of a penalty seemed to be 0/40. Now it's 1/1. (Thanks to AH for providing this information on 3 December 2009). AH gives further details of his dealings with the council on his web site Here (open the Petersfield page).
Eastleigh
On 28th September 2006 Eastleigh Borough Council provided the following information:
1) Height restrictions in car parks. Southampton Road - Street Level Car Park 1.98 m; Southampton Road - Multi-Storey Car Park 2.06 m; Swan Shopping Centre - 2.13 m.
2) Parking within marked bays is a requirement in all car parks operated by parking services of Eastleigh Borough Council. It is also expected that any vehicle which overhangs adjoining bays would have to purchase additional tickets as necessary.
3) Toilet and waste facilities details can be found on the Carparks4u web site.
4) There are no bays dedicated to motorhomes and trailer parking (which includes caravans).
5) There is no ban on overnight parking, however use of vehicles as a dwelling or for domestic or sanitary purposes is specifically excluded. In effect this would prevent owners from sleeping in their motorhomes overnight, whilst in Eastleigh Borough Council car parks.
6) Currently the car parks likely to be affected by the restriction of narrow roads would be Hanns Way, Leigh Road, Romsey Road, The Swan Centre, Southampton Road and the Multi storey car park. Some of these car parks would also be affected by height restrictions as noted in point one.
On 4th June 2008, in response to a follow-up request, the Council provided the following information:
All car park information, including height restrictions etc, can be found at the Carparks4u web site, which shows location, spaces numbers, information on number of disabled bays and what other vehicles are permitted to park in these, if any. A full list of the car parks can also be found on the council's web site Here.
The only car park we have which has spaces large enough for motor homes is Twyford Road Car Park, situated at the junction of Twyford Road, Leigh Road, Southampton Road, Coles Close and Bishopstoke Road. The car park is accessed via Coles Close, off the roundabout situated at this junction. The spaces (4 in number) are at the rear right hand corner of the car park and are actually designated as Coach Spaces; however we have no problem with motor homes using these spaces provided they pay the appropriate tariff, i.e. not the coach Tariff which allows 2 hours free parking.
In addition we have no objection to motor homes occupying more than one bay, due to size, provided the appropriate number of tickets are purchased and displayed prominently within the vehicle. The only car parks which would be suitable for motor homes would be the street level car parks as all the others have height restrictions that would prevent virtually all but the smallest of motor homes gaining access. Whilst all but the Swan Centre Car Park are open 24/7, the Traffic Orders expressly exclude use of vehicles for any domestic purposes, including sleeping.
Eastleigh Borough Council have further details on their web site Here.
Fareham
On 13th December 2007 Fareham Borough Council provided the following updated information:
The only off street Fareham Council car park with larger spaces suitable for motor home parking is at Malthouse Lane, Fareham. The waiting limit is 24 hours, and the current parking fees are: Up to one hour £0.80; Up to two hours £1.60; Up to three hours £2.40; Up to four hours £3.20; Up to five hours £4.00; Over five hours £10.00. The charges currently apply Monday to Saturday 08.00 to 18.00 hours with free parking on Sundays or public holidays. The charge is the same for motor homes as it is for cars, but the larger vehicles such as motor homes must park within the larger parking bays at this location. There are no height restrictions or approach difficulties associated with this site, and there are no toilets or waste facilities. There is a 30cwt or 3.5 tonnes weight limit in all our off street car parks and motor homes are allowed to use limited wait on street parking.
Fareham Borough Council have further details on their web site Here.
Gosport
On 31st August 2006 Gosport Borough Council provided the following information:
1. Height restrictions. The only car park with a height restriction is No 2 battery east (Stokes Bay).
2. Requirement to park within marked bays. This is a requirement to park within marked bays and where there is a need to occupy two bays then there is a need to purchase a parking ticket for both bays.
3. Provision of toilet and waste disposal facilities. We have no provision for the disposal of waste, toilet facilities provided at our car parks are provided for use by the general public and as such the facilities are limited.
4. Provision of spaces specifically aimed at motorhomes or caravans. Gosport does not have any.
5. Provision (or ban on) overnight parking. There is no overnight camping or sleeping in any cark park although you can stay overnight at the long stay Lorry Park in Mumby Road.
6. Restricted access caused by narrow roads/entrances. Gosport is not aware of anything which may impede access by motor caravans to on street parking places. Any vehicle that cannot access the car parks will be excluded from its use.
On 11th December 2007 Gosport Borough Council confirmed that the information above had not changed.
The council has further parking details on its web site Here.
Users of this web site have provided the following information:
Mumby Road Lorry Park. An update on the Mumby Road lorry park, Gosport, Hampshire. Had this following an enquiry I made: Thank you for your enquiry regarding Mumby Road lorry park. Mobile homes can park in this car park but unfortunately they cannot be inhabited overnight. None of our off street carparking in Gosport is available for people to stay overnight, only vehicles. (Many thanks to AC for this information, received 14 July 2009).
Stokes Bay near Gosport is a cracking place, Cafe, Toilets, no height bars and a view of Solent shipping traffic and the Isle of Wight. Many spaces have 'overhang' possibilities. I also spotted unrestricted access to a car park further along in Lee on Solent with the same outlook and some shops to browse as well. Both were Pay & Display. (Many thanks to TH for this information, received 31 March 2007).
Hart District
Hart District Council have parking details on their web site Here. However, in reponse to a request for further information (August 2006) the council stated that, in general, Motor homes or caravans are not allowed to use the car parks under the Council Parking Order
There are no height restrictions in place at Council owned car parks nor is access restricted by narrow roads.
No waste disposal facilities provided.
Vehicles must park within the bay markings.
There is no overnight parking allowed in most car parks but where overnight parking is provided there is a charge of £1.00 (on 11th March, in response to a follow-up request, the council stated "details of the current charge is displayed in the car parks").
Havant
On 17th December 2007, in response to a follow-up request, the council stated "Havant Borough Council has no specific provision for facilities for Motorhomes within the borough although a few town centre and beach car parks do not have height restrictions. If a motorhome was to be parked in a town centre car park it would be expected to display one ticket per bay occupied.".
Havant Borough Council have parking details on their web site Here.
Users of this web site have provided the following information:
Good parking for Motorhomes at all seafront car parks on Hayling Island, Hampshire (Havant Borough). No Height restrictions. Free parking November, December, January. Haven’t seen prices for 2007. (Thanks to BO'C for this information, received 23 February 2007).
New Forest District
On 25th August 2006 New Forest District Council provided the following information:
1. Height restriction barriers at 7'6" at the following car parks - Burley, Rumbridge Street & Westfield in Totton, A338 Slip Road car park in Fordingbridge.
2. Motorists are expected to park within marked bays unless the vehicle is too large to do so. Only one ticket needs to be purchased per vehicle
3. No provision for toilet and waste disposal facilities.
4. No provision for specified motorhome spaces.
5. No overnight sleeping in any NFDC car parks.
6. Because of their small capacity or layout, the following car parks would be restrictive to larger motorhomes: Fordingbridge; Bransgore; Lyndhurst; Brockenhurst; Ashurst; New Milton - Spencer Road North; Lymington - Emsworth Road, Cannon Street West, Gosport Street, Town Quay, Southampton Road; Ringwood - Furlong Short Stay, Blynkbonnie; Beaulieu; Totton - Winsor Road.
On 5th February 2008, in response to a follow-up request, New Forest District Council provided the following updated information:
All details remain the same as above with the exception of areas with height barriers in paragraph 1.
The A338 is somewhat more ‘motorhome friendly’ in that the barriers have been removed and the surface is now bitmac instead of loose stone. It is ideal for visiting Fordingbridge as it is within 200m of the High Street and directly opposite the much improved recreation area at the side of the River Avon. However, due to an influx of travellers this year we are being forced into erecting barriers in Elingfield car park in Totton behind the High Street. All barriers are now 2.1m in height
New Forest District Council have further details on their web site Here.
Users of this web site have provided the following information:
I am making notes of car parks that are suitable for a motorhome or have spaces that you can squeeze into if the extra length is an overhang as our Hymer (6m) has.
Barton On Sea, the car park at the southern end of the sea front has spaces you can get into.
Burley, New Forest ignore the car and coach park sign, you won't get in as there is a height barrier and farther down the road a 6'6" width limit. Instead head out on the Brokenhurst road, at the top of the hill (approx 200/300 yards) opposite the cricket pitch is a Forest car park, free and loads of space.
Lymington, New Forest follow the signs for the marina's, towards the back of the marina car park there are some large spaces.
Ringwood, large spaces available only at weekends and bank holidays at main shoppers car park.
(Many thanks to AV for this information, received 22 June 2007).
Lepe Country Park
Access to this is, in places, a bit narrow but the bottom section of the car park is not marked into bays as the surface is gravel. So, as long as you choose your space sensibly, it is a super place to while away an hour or two as it is adjacent to the Solent and has plenty to watch. There is also a ticket machine, Cafe & toilets. (Great for dog walking too - with the necessary pick-up equipment of course). (Thanks to RS for providing this information on 9 January 2008).
Lymington
Although the directions to the Leisure Centre in Lymington lead you to a height restricted car park, just when you think all is lost there is parking opposite reserved for private vehicles which are too tall with a PENALTY for anyone using it who can access the car park - this makes a welcome change!! (Thanks to SH for providing this information on 30 October 2007).
Lyndhurst
Ignore village car park, you will probably get a ticket. Take A35 Southampton Road out of village, opposite fire station turn right then sharp left into narrow road to Boltons Bench. Ignore first small car park on left. After memorial second car park is good or proceed further up tarmac road for other gravel car parks. No marked bays, voluntary donations only and no tickets - and you can watch the cricket from your van. (Thanks to GJ for providing this information on 27 October 2007).
Milford on Sea
Car park at the side of the Needles Eye Cafe hasn't got specific motorhome spaces but they are wide enough to just accommodate our 23 foot CI and the ones at the back have a grass verge by the road which is ideal to accommodate our overhang. There are no 'facilities' as such but the Cafe has toilets, food & ice cream etc. There is a parking charge. (Thanks to RS for providing this information on 9 January 2008).
Portsmouth
On 7th September 2006 Portsmouth City Council provided the following information:
1 Most of our car parks have a height restriction in the region of 2.1 metres. D-Day Coach/Car park is the main exception.
2 Parking within the bay is enforced but should 2 bays be required then both bays must be paid for.
3 D - Day does have toilet facilities and an 1100 euro container for dry waste.
4 No provision for specified motorhome spaces.
5 There is a ban on overnight parking for motor homes and caravans on-street and the Parking Order for the car parks does state 'No Overnight Camping'.
6 Some of the car parks do have restricted access but D-Day Coach/Car Park does not.
On 12th March 2008, in response to a follow-up request, the Council provided the following information:
Motor homes can use the car parks the same as any other vehicle during daylight hours. Any vehicle which uses multiple bays has to purchase a pay & display ticket for the bays used.
Height restriction booms are in place on the car parks as follows: London Road Car Park, 2M; Hilsea Moat Car Park, 2.1M; Church Street Car Park, 2.1M; Clarence Street Car Park, 2.2M; Lumps Fort Car Park, 2M; Pyramids Car Park, 2M; Victory Car Park, 2M; Clarence Pier Car Park, 2.1M; Clarence Parade Car Park, 2.1M.
Within PCC operated car parks, there is no provision for overnight sleeping or camping or cooking, as detailed in TRO No 3 Order 1997.
For info - From the 31 March 08 the following car parks will be renamed: Victory Car Park to Esplanade Car Park; Lumps Fort Car Park to Canoe Lake Car Park; Clarence Parade Car Park to Southsea Common Car Park; Havant Street Car Park to The Harbour Car Park; Church Street Car Park to Commercial Road, North Car Park; Dorothy Dymond Car Park to Guildhall Walk Car Park.
Portsmouth City Council have further details on their web site Here.

Southsea
Southsea is one of our favourite destinations and we used the D Day car park quite recently having checked with the Blue Reef centre next door beforehand. I read the sign on our return to the 'van and there was quite a low weight limit for vans, about 1.5 tonnes which I assume is aimed at commercials. However that does leave room for ambiguity compared with the info issued by Portsmouth Council (see below for update). As a point of interest my Marquis Dorset is 5.4m long and had to use a perimeter space to avoid an obvious overhang. (Thanks to TH for providing this information on 18 February 2007).
Portsmouth/Southsea
E-mail sent to Portsmouth Council: "You've been very helpful with my last request for parking my 5.4m motorhome in the past so can you help with this query re Southsea:- Apparently we can park in the D Day car park, and did so quite recently to visit Blue Reef at their recommendation. I did notice, however, that the signage seems to indicate a weight limit of 1.5 tonnes for vans. Is that unladen or gross weight, does it apply to motorhomes (mine weighs in at 2.8 tonnes when loaded, but plated for 3.5 tonnes, similar size to a high roof Transit van)? And does only apply to commercial vehicles? Southsea is one of our favourite leisure destinations, especially with the grandchildren, but would not like to fall foul of your regulations. Also, how do we stand re Clarence Pier?"
Reply from Portsmouth Council: "D-Day coach/car park is not a problem for you provided you park centrally and make use of 2 car bays end to end. This does mean of course you would have to purchase 2 tickets but at least you would not cause us any concern. Do NOT, under any circumstance, park in a coach bay. We have had to refuse this on may occasions and we cannot be seen to make a rule for any particular individual. At Clarence Pier the same rules would apply but there is now a height restriction boom in situe. Although the entrance may be open it might be closed at very short notice should we be told there are travellers in the area. Hope this helps."
(Thanks to TH (and Portsmouth Council) for providing this information on 2nd March 2007).
Portsmouth
Head for the railway station and there is parking meter parking on the side of the road with easy walking access to the Maritime attractions and Gunwharf Keys. (Thanks to SH for providing this information on 30 October 2007).
Portsmouth
We have just returned from a visit to Portsmouth and, by prior arrangement with the Parking Control office (Paul Avery, who was very helpful), we were allowed to use a coach bay in the D-Day Museum car park for our Kontiki (7.8m, 4.25tonnes). We were told to purchase a coach parking ticket, which was actually cheaper for an all-day stay than it would have been for a car. (Thanks to TM for providing this information on 20 February 2010).
Rushmoor
On 19th September 2006 an officer of Rushmoor Borough Council went to a great deal of trouble to provide a document which is colour coded to highlight height restrictions, overnight lorry parks, car parks not recommended because of other access difficulties and sloping sites which might cause difficulty for motor homes. The document can be downloaded in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format from Here.
On 16th April 2008, in response to a follow-up request, the council confirmed that the above information was still correct and provided details of a new car park in Farnborough: Kings Moat surface car park - 58 spaces. (please note this car park is locked between 6.00 p.m. and 8.00 a.m.)
Rushmoor Borough Council have car park maps and a link to other details on their web site Here.

Within the order you will find confirmation that car parks can not be used for sleeping/eating at any time. The order is available in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format Here (new window)
In addition to the order an update of the Southampton City Council parking guide was provided that details changes to height barriers, spaces and locations is also provided under separate cover. The guide is available in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format Here (new window)
Users of this web site have provided the following information:
There is a good car park I used recently in Southampton - Mayflower Park. It is right on the riverfront and adjacent to the Red Funnel Ferry terminal to the Isle of Wight. It is within 10 mins walk of the city centre. The bays are marked and reasonably wide. I could squeeze in my 2.5m wide van. Some bays have the length marked others don't but my 5.5m was ok. Cost 70p per hour. The downside is a limit of 2 hrs but you are able to come back and obtain a further ticket. This is clearly stated on the ticket machines. (Thanks to RS for this information, received 6 November 2009).
Test Valley
On 31st October 2006 Test Valley Borough Council provided the following information:
1. Height restrictions. Only in two car parks at present: Chantry Centre multi storey car park Andover max height 6'6'' and Borden gate surface car park Andover max height 7'3''.
2. Requirements for parking within bay confines (including any requirement for purchasing two parking tickets where the length of a vehicle means that it overhangs a second bay at its rear). Shepherds Spring Lane Andover has Coach bays £3 for 5 hours or £6 all day. All other parking bays; vehicles must purchase 2nd ticket if extending into second bay.
3. Any provision of toilet and waste disposal facilities. George Yard and Anton Mill/Borden Gate car parks in Andover and Broadwater Road car park in Romsey have toilet facilities. No waste facilities other than recycling centres.
4. Any provision of spaces specifically aimed at motorhomes and/or caravans. None.
5. Any provision for (or ban on) overnight parking. Overnight parking is permitted in all surface car parks but it is not permitted to Sleep, Camp or prepare or cook food or wash clothing or other articles.
6. Restricted access caused by narrow roads/entrances. None of the surface car parks have restricted Access other than Borden Gate at present.
On 26th September 2008, in response to a follow-up request, the Council provided the following information:
There are two car parks in Andover; Shepherds Spring Lane and Winchester Road car parks and one in Romsey, Alma Road car park where motor homes may be parked, if the motor home extends into two bays, the driver is required to purchase and display two tickets. It is permitted to park overnight but it is not permitted to sleep or cook/eat in the vehicle.
Test Valley Borough Council have further details, including a full copy of the Off Street Parking places order and maps of car park locations and tariffs, on their web site Here.
Winchester
On 9th September 2006 Winchester City Council provided the following information:
Height restrictions. Motorhomes may only park in the Coach Park, Worthy Lane, Winchester or St Catherines Park and Ride, Garnier Road, Winchester. There are no height restrictions in either of these car parks.
In the Coach Park, Worthy Lane, Winchester, Motorhomes may park in Coach bays within the car park. In the St Catherines Park and Ride there is an area provided specifically for Motorhome parking. In all other Winchester car parks, Motorhomes are not permitted unless they will wholly fit within a marked parking bay.
There are no waste disposal facilities in either car park however St Catherines Park and Ride has an Amenity Building open during peak hours.
Overnight parking is not allowed within the St Catherines Park and Ride site but is possible at the Coach Park, Worthy Lane, Winchester. Sleeping within the motorhome is not however permitted.
There is easy access to both car parks.
The Council pointed out that there is a parking map on their web site Here.
On 14th March 2008, in response to a follow-up request, the council supplied the following information:
1. There is motorhome parking available within our Coach Park (in Coach bays) and St Catherines Park and Ride sites.
2. All other car parks listed on the council web site Here are unavailable for motorhome parking due to weight limits, length limits (as they would not be able to park wholly within a marked bay) and as there are no designated bays provided.
3. Overnight parking is permitted in all car parks save for Barfield and St Catherines Park and Ride sites and The Brooks Centre car park however no sleeping or cooking is permitted.
Winchester City Council have further details on their web site Here.
Users of this web site have provided the following information:
1) We parked in Worthy Lane, coach park in Winchester on 21st October. It is FREE on a Sunday and we were the only motorhome there. There were about 3 coaches and lots of cars. Car parks belong to a hotel with health club or something, so lots of people around which meant we felt more confident leaving our van there whilst we walked around town. (Thanks to LH for this information, received 31 October 2007).
2) We parked in the St.Catherines park & ride dedicated motorhome facility on the outskirts of Winchester last year, and found it to be excellent, there was plenty of room for several motorhomes, and I believe the fee included the bus ride into town, very well recommended. (Thanks to DS for this information, received 23 November 2008).
