On 5th September 2006, Staffordshire County Council provided the following information:
1. Height restrictions - Information regarding height restrictions is currently being assembled under a DfT initiative and some information can be accessed from Here (new window).
The council also provided a copy of a PDF document listing bridge headrooms in Staffordshire. This can be downloaded from here.
2. Requirements for parking within bay confines (including any requirement for purchasing two parking tickets where the length of a
vehicle means that it overhangs a second bay at its rear) - Vehicles are required to park wholly within a marked bay on the street.
3. Any provision of toilet and waste disposal facilities - District Council functions.
4. Any provision of spaces specifically aimed at motor homes and/or caravans - District Council functions.
5. Any provision for (or ban on) overnight parking - A number of designated roadside parking bays exist in Staffordshire, many of which have TRO'S controlling length of stay and vehicle types. As an authority seeking DPE Powers we are currently reviewing these and capturing them on a GIS database. This information is expected to be available in 2008.
6. Restricted access caused by narrow roads/entrances - There are no records that itemise restricted width entrances.

Our parking orders do not permit overnight camping or sleeping on car parks.

East Staffordshire
On 13th October 2006, East Staffordshire Council provided the following information:
East Staffordshire Borough Council does not provide spaces specific for motorhomes or caravans.
The Council's Off Street Parking Places Order prohibits anyone from sleeping, camping or cooking on any of the car parks.
The Car Park Order also stipulates that all vehicles should be parked within a designated car park space. We always advise car park users with larger vehicles to purchase a valid ticket for any space which they use. E.G - Vehicle takes up two spaces, two car park tickets should be purchased.
We have a number of car parks with height restriction barriers namely, Fairfield Road, Uttoxeter; New Street, Fleet Street, Bond Street, Burton upon Trent; Cornmill Lane, Tutbury.
We also have two rooftop car parks in Burton located at Burton Place & Coopers Square these car parks are unsuitable for motor homes as they have a very tight turning circle.
We do also have a weight limit of 3.5 tonnes on all of our car parks.

Lichfield
On 11th September 2006, Lichfield District Council provided the following information:
All of our car parks have a maximum weight limit of 3.5t gvw, we have no facility for vehicles larger than this. In addition car parks with more than
one deck have a limit of 2.5t on the upper decks. This applies to the Birmingham Road multi storey, the upper deck at the Backcester Lane car park
and to the new Lombard Street facility. The multi storey also has a height limit of 1.9m and the other two have limits of 2.15m. No other car parks in
the town centre have height limits.
We do not have any specific bays set aside for motor homes, these vehicles may use any car park if they can fit in a normal bay. If the vehicle
occupies more than one bay we will accept this on the condition that the appropriate payment is made for both bays.
The car parks at the Bus Station, Bird Street and Friary Outer all have toilets but we do not have any facility for the emptying of waste tanks.
Overnight parking is allowed on any of our car parks but camping is not, in other words you may leave the vehicle if stopping in a hotel or with friends
but you cannot sleep in it.
All of the car parks are accessed by our maintenance vehicles but the long stay at Friary Outer or the short stay at the University would offer the
easiest option for parking a larger vehicle.
On 10th March 2008, in response to a follow-up request, the council provided the following information:
Motorhomes would be allowed on any of our pay and display car parks in Lichfield subject to the following conditions;
A maximum 3.5t weight limit applies on all surface car parks. Multi deck car parks have a 2.5t limit and are also height limited to either 1.9 or 2.0m and signed as appropriate. Our bays conform to the national standard of 4.8m x 2.4m. Vehicles larger than this may use two adjacent bays but would need to purchase two tickets. Vehicles may be left overnight on any car park but our order does prohibit camping (sleeping in the vehicle) as we have no suitable facility for this. The pay period runs from 07:30 to 18:30 and will shortly be extended to include Sunday. If an overnight vehicle remains after 07:30 then payment will be required.
Other details are available on our website, major changes are planned to our car parks in the next year and details will be on the site nearer the time.
Lichfield District Council have further details on their web site Here.
Users of this web site have provided the following information:
We have a 28ft Odessa plus 8ft box trailer. Lichfield has nothing at all, I recently sat on double yellow lines for 50 mins. whilst having conversations with the council. I was finally told there was nowhere to park and to use an industrial area and walk in, or they advise people to go to Rugley and get a train to Lichfield. (Thanks to TW for providing this information on 23 March 2007).
Newcastle under Lyme
On 6th September 2006, Newcastle under Lyme Council provided the following information:
Because of a continuing problem with unauthorised occupation of land by travelling communities. All of our car parks have height restriction barriers and none are able to accept a motorhome unless they are under seven foot six inches in height.
The same situation also applies to most, if not all, of the car parks associated with supermarkets and shopping malls in the area.
The only parking places available are on-street, public highway, short-term parking; currently this is free parking. It happens that there are currently very few areas covered by Controlled Parking Zones (Residents Only Parking) although this may change substantially over the next two years when the Borough acquires Decriminalised Parking Enforcement powers.
On 31st January 2008, in response to a follow-up request, the counsil supplied the following information:
No sleeping. No cooking.
Max weight 1.75T, 5.0m length, 2.0m width, 2.13m height EXCEPT where height restriction barriers then 1.83m.
Parking only in multiple bays where bays are end to end. Two tickets required.
Max stay 24 hours.
Height restriction barriers on King St., Hassell St. and Midways Car Parks.
Possibility of parking in two adjacent bays (end to end) Goose St. and Cherry Orchard.

2. Height restriction barriers (normally 2.1 metres)exist at the majority of the sites.
3. All sites are provided free of charge but overnight parking is not permitted.
4. No provision is made for toilets or waste disposal facilities at the car parks apart from High Street, Kinver, where public toilets exist. There are also public toilets in Wombourne village centre.
5. There is no provision of spaces specifically aimed at motorhomes and/or caravans.

May I add what I feel could be a very useful motorhome parking place: Location: Stafford, Staffordshire: Lorry / Coach car park off Doxey Road, Here is a Mulitimap location. The lorry / coach park is one of several parking areas situated next to a large Sainsbury's store and very close to Stafford town centre which has a number of useful stores and attractions. The lorry / coach park is the only one Without Height Barriers. (Thanks to MP for this information, received 29 May 2007).

Visited Churnet Valley (Staffs) yesterday. Very under rated. If you approach from the north end there is a carpark at Oakamoor offering delightful wooded walks. The car park has a height barrier BUT the overflow carpark just a few yards further has nothing and is the better of the two (the logic of this escapes me). There is an excellent cafe cum restaurant cum coffee house about a mile further down. Called The Ramblers Retreat, closed Monday and Tuesday. Exceptional place. The road from Oakamoor is narrow single track. Might be better to go in via Alton with large motorhomes. Again excellent walks from car park, parking not massive but acceptable. (Thanks to KS for this information, received 19 July 2007). The Ramblers Retreat is a Forestry Commission car park - details Here.

Stoke on Trent City Council have further details on their web site Here.
Update 23 July 2007:
Some time after the initial reply from Stoke on Trent City Council above it came to my notice that many other vehicles (e.g. large 4x4s) weigh in excess of the weight limit for Stoke on Trent car parks of 35cwt (some of the largest 4x4s even being heavier than many motorhomes). A further request for information was sent to the council asking for clarification. In response the council stated "The Parking Attendants are advised that given the weight of many new vehicles the weight restriction should not be enforced. However, all vehicles must park within the bay markings provided, with a valid pay and display ticket. In the case where the vehicle needs to use two bays because of its size, the driver must purchase two pay and display tickets to cover both bays. Drivers are advised to check that their vehicle can gain access to the car parks as many have height barriers - specifically motorhomes. Vehicles are not permitted to park on the car park for accommodation purposes."
Tamworth
On 16th October 2006, Tamworth Borough Council provided the following information:
In relation to your request regarding the access, parking and onsite facilities for motorhome sized vehicles. Tamworth Borough Council only have the responsibility for pay and display type parking facilities, of which only one may be of interest to you which also can cater for coaches, this is the Jolly Sailor coach and car park. There are no onsite communal facilities in this location.
The remainder of the pay and display car parks are height restricted although we do not have specific records of the barrier height it can safely be assumed that it could be in the region of 1.8 - 2.3 mtrs.
Tamworth Borough Council have further details on their web site Here.
Users of this web site have provided the following information:
1) ASDA superstore near Tamworth, Staffs (Just off the A5 bypass) now has a height barrier of 2.3 metres high. This also governs access to the fuel pumps. (Thanks to SW for this information, received 12 January 2007).
2) I live near Tamworth in Staffordshire and was intrigued to read in MMM (where I saw your letter) that a 2.3 barrier was in place at ASDA in Tamworth (just off the A5). This surprised me as I usually visit the site on a weekly basis and don’t remember seeing one. I made a point of checking today (8 April 2007) and can confirm it is no longer in place. There are barriers to other Retail Parks in the near vicinity, but not to ASDA or Sainsbury’s. (Thanks very much to Mike for this information, received 8 April 2007).
